i-drive goes blank
i have noticed that my i-drive screen occasionally goes blank when first starting the car. i called my local dealer (rassmussen bmw) and the service manager told me that an upgraded software is now available. he suggested that i leave the car all day as sometimes there are glitches involved. my question is: since this problem is infrequent, do i really need the upgrade. in other words, is there any reason NOT to have the -drive software installed?
06 e60 wagon titangrau ii, beige int, prem, cold weather, sat, logic 7, nav, rear side airbags, step.

I really wonder though about those upgrades. Is BMW actually keeping a list of problems and detailing which software version will fix it? I have heard about the blank screen issue for a while and there have been many software updates since then.
I also wonder if I will have more problems with an upgrade. Overall the car is fine and I enjoy it.

They may have fixes for problems that exist but you may have not experienced just yet or pobbily not noticed. Upgrades on firmare / hardware such as the Idrive is generally a direct result of complaints and or further observations found inhouse or by customers. It is cheaper to not create upgrades, but in the interest of trouble free customers they come out with updates and patches to resolve problems or issues, such as slowness, blank screens, new features (such as perspective view, which adds the arrows guides at point of directional change). I am wondering if upgrading the I-Drive software will have any effect on my car stalling last month. I was in traffic going about 15mph and the car just died, lost power in both steering and brakes, luckily i wasn't going very fast. I had to put it in neutral to start it back up and continue on. Has anyone had their car stall on them, kinda weird seeing as mine is steptronic?

| | Reply » i-drive goes blank | Well, I dropped my e90 at the dealer today for a similar problem. It freezes at the lawyerly warning screen or goes blank and nothing, including radio, works. Naturally, the service people can't duplicate it eventhough it happened to me several times past a few days. They are holding my car over night to see if they can duplicate it in the morning.
Wagonman, did the s/w upgrade fix your problem?
