 Has anyone's wooden dash cracked?

I have a 2004 530i. I recently noticed a small, but noticable scratch on the passenger side dash in the anthracite maple wood. I have no idea how this happened because I rarely have passengers in the car. I was at a BMW dealership a couple weeks ago attending a BMWCCA meeting and casually mentioned it to a guy working in the service dept. He said that he has heard of the wood occasionally cracking and to check with the BMW service dept Reps because it should be covered under warranty.

I called the BMW Service dept. Rep the next day, and was told that they would have to have the dash looked at by the BMW regional rep. I live an hour away from the dealership and offered to email digital photos. I sent them the pictures, but I was told that the BMW regional rep wants to see the crack in person before approving warranty coverage and will not be back to the dealership until October.

This is the Dreyer & Reinbold dealership in Greenwood, Indiana.

I've attached 2 pictures of the crack.

Has anyone else experienced this mysterious crack?

Yes, I've heard of similar crack/scratch (although in the picture it looks more a scratch than a crack), but it's quite rare. As the service rep mentioned it should be covered under warranty.

My friends 2002 530i had the actual trim peal off from people coming in and out of the passenger side and bumping into the wood(really plastic) with their knees. I believe he had it replaced under the warranty.

When reunited with my E60.. I had a slight crack at the weakest point (left of the glove box) of the wood venier panel... YES Yamilrx it is real wood (venier) over plastic!. Jim Cupp covered it no problem and I actually got a much better "grain" with the replacement. It wasn't cracked in Germany........ I don't want to know how it happened.

Are you saying you think that wood is just really plastic?

I heard this comment before taking mine in to have the piece replaced. I specifically asked to see the removed piece so I could examine it. It is wood venier over plastic. It was the venier that had cracked.
