 Oil consumption question

Hi All,
Just got 6500 miles on my 2006 525i (I do a lot of hwy driving) ang got this message on i-drive screen: "Oil level at minimum. Add 1 quart of oil.".
To be honest I was very surprised as I didn't know it would burn oil so fast...or maybe this is a normal characteristic for this new 3.0 liters engine?
Any comments? Thanks

This can and will happen, especially when the engine is relatively new. Add a quart of BMW approved synthetic oil and you should be good to go, and you'll probably never have to do it again between oil changes.

Just bought mine and my light went off (36K miles) two weeks later. I was rather alarmed, took it to the dealership and they told me it's fairly common for M's, X's, 5's & 330's to burn oil. Is this guy full or crap?

I've also read that if the car isn't broken in properly, it can more easily turn into an oil burner later in life. But I wouldn't consider the car an oil burner if you have to add a quart every now and then. I would say the best thing to do would be to keep a spare quart in the trunk and not worry about it!

Also, on most vehicles you would have changed the oil once or twice during that same milege.
