545i import from Canada to U.S. HELP PLEASE

Car is in U.S. but still registered/titled in Canada. Will I have problems with warranty . I live in a non-emmison state/county but are emissions different on Canadian cars if so how can I tell if this car meets U.S. Standards? Thank you!

Think very hard about this.

I had 2 Canadian cars in the US (I moved from Canada). Emmissions are different. Definitely you will have warranty issues. The speedo, MPG, Odometer etc. will be in metric. When you sell it it will be worth less than a US car.

In terms of warranty, I believe BMW USA will honor warranty for a Canadian build car, provided that the car was registered in Canada for more than 1 year. I emailed BMW USA awhile back when the US dollar is alot stronger and it's significantly cheaper to buy in Canada and import into the US (but end up didn't do it). I lived in California and back then I had problems trying to import an old integra which my wife has bought in Canada (she moved down to here for school), but that was due to a different issue (some passive restraint differences, not emission).

Sounds like you already got the car and need to import. Talk to your local DMV and ask about procedures to get it import). For us, we have to get a letter from the manufacturer specifying how the car is the same (or different in anyway). Also, we have to go to a different place for smog check (some specialized place that does more testing on emission, once you passed they give you a emission sticker so that you can registered).

But one thing you will lose is the free mainteance (at least that's what BMW USA told me couple years ago). Best bet is to email BMW NA and voice your question to them. Last when I checked seems like they won't issue this letter (that you show to your local DMV) unless the car has been more than 1 year old in Canada. Plus the dealer may give you a little hard time or fuss about warranty being a Canadian car, but shouldn't be a major issue. My wife knew of her friend who import her VW rabbit from Canada with no issues, so shouldn't be too difficult (although quite some hassles...).
