Retune the 525i (US & Canada)

I'm told the 525i has a detuned 3 liter (same engine as the 530). Whats the feasiblity of retuning it? Could it be done for less than the $5000 price difference between the two cars? Just a curiosity thing...

Found the link that discussed the engine differences. BMW list a 1 stage intake manifold on the 525 3.0 engine, and a 3 stage manifold on the 530 3.0 engine for the E60. In addition to the manifold, there may be changes to the engine control software. Don't think the tuners have listed aftermarket parts for the 525 yet, but wouldn't recommend that during the warranty period, in any case.

Sorry, don't know much about engines... intake manifold? What's the difference between 1 and 3?

Seriously? It is the part of the engine that flows the air from the air filter to the intake valves in the cylinder head. In its most basic form, an intake manifold is a pipe, or tube. Simple intake manifolds are tuned (designed with different length tubes) to balance torque vs hp when the engine is designed. Intake manifolds with multiple stages can effectively have different lengths for the air to travel, at different engine rpms, so as to get better power at different flow conditions. Think of the manifold as having one length of tube at low rpm (optimized for more torque) and a different effective length of tube at higher rpm (for more airflow, therefore more hp). Three stages means three effective lengths.

Simple answer is, it sounds pretty expensive to change a 525 into a 530, apart from the warranty issues.

Even I found that informative

I believe that the exhaust manifolds are also different between the two versions as well. The 255hp version is essentially an OEM header.
