A lot of the loudest opinions you probably hear pertain to subjective things like styling, active steering, and i-Drive.
Personal experience will tell you all you need. Go drive one!
I've had a chance to drive a 530i sport and a 545i sport. Fantastic cars. An E60 w/active steering & active roll stabilization will likely be my next car. (But, don't listen to me.  )
Edit: BTW, I'm now convinced the auto journalists are by in large idiots, focusing so much on something they neither have the basic comprehension for or give the smallest of time to learn: e.g., the i-Drive. Even if i-Drive is something that you don't at first like, I believe it is something that will grow on you and will make you wonder one day, "WTF was everyone complaining about!"
