 oil for 323i

I recently purchased a 2000 323i, which I love, but was wondering why it's neccesary to use the synthetic oil and how often you can go between oil changes.

Since this is your first post, you might not know there's a search function because it doesn't show up until after you register and are logged in. Look for it in the blue bar at the top of the page between "New Posts" and "Quick Links." If you search "Synthetic Oil" you'll get pages of threads that will answer your questions on this subject and many other common questions.

But in nutshell, you use synthetic because it's what the newer cars call for, it last longer and the basic consensus is that you should change synthetic oil every 7500 or after one year, whichever comes first.

More of the newer synthetics can go the full 15K that is the BMW baseline as mileage between changes.

And you use synthetics because they are MUCH better oils.

And it doesn't cost more as it last longer and protect the engine better.

I have a 2004 325CI, and I actually just talked to the service person and she recommended Mobile 1 15W30... I will check at the local auto stores, as I am about to long time store mine for a year and change the oil after the storage..

I use 0w40 Mobil 1 I love the stuff.

Actually BMW's 15k is a recommendation, if you actually follow your service minder to the exact mileage you are really driving you will always change your oil in less then 15k. I change at 7500 but I have let it go longer.

It depends on your driving style, I have found (for as hard as I drive) my car if I followed the reminder would only get about 10-11,000 miles on it before the service reminder popped.
