 Navigation opinions - E60

I am trying to decide whether to include navigation in a 525 and am surprised that I haven't been able to find information on this issue. There seem to be a few references but nothing definitive about the i-drive navigation.

This will be my first BMW and I'm therefore pretty unfamiliar with how the system works and how well it does so.

Can anyone offer advice? How well does it work? How easy/difficult is it to use? Is it worth it (its a relatively expensive option - $1,800).

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I couldn't decide if I really needed it because I'm a very good map reader. I went for the option anyway. My impression is that after you get the hang of it it's pretty amazing.

Remember that if you lease the car you only pay about 50% of the $1800 (over the term of the lease) and if you buy the car you always have a car worth a little more at resale.

There is nothing better than being in a strange place and having that little voice in the dashboard tell you where to go. Take your pick...hear it from the dashboard or the pissed off spouse in the passenger seat.

The first thing that surprised me when I saw the price for the E60 NAV option was that it is the exact same price I paid for NAV on my E39 even way back in 2001!

Now BMWs NAV leaves MUCH to be desired compared to say Lexus but I do find it nice to have. The E60 NAV should be DVD-based which means it should be able to hold more information per DVD (CD) and possibly be faster. My E39 NAV is so annoyingly slow but it does the job when I need it to.

However, I have absolutely zero experience with the E60 NAV...I would like to hear comments as well. Regardless, my wife LOVES the nav and so all future cars we buy will be equipped with such a feature.

Okay... Here is the deal:

The new E60 Nav system inconjunction w/ i-drive leave the E39 nav that Agent99 has in the dust. The Nav system is incredibly fast. Scale-in and Scale out. When you get the Nav system, the car will have i-drive voice command functions (another reason to get the nav) w/ the voice command, you can now tell the car to change the scale of the map, Change from CD to FM Frequency 106.5, change from radio to CD #5 track8, tell the bluetooth phone to dia 555-876-5309, and a whole lot of other things.

The nav is great!! You can find a restaurant via Nav and click link and your bluetooth phone will dial the restaurant for you. Yeah... pretty cool stuff.

btw, get the logic7 premiun sound!! Its awesome!!

cheers,

beewang

P.S. don't forget the Sirius radio

I much appreciate the input. Does it work the same way in Europe? Sounds great and certainly leasing means you only pay for a portion of the fullcost.

One point raised that I would like to confirm: Do I understand correctly that without Nav you cannot voice activate a bluetooth phone that otherwise has that capability when using it through the car's system?

Sweet. This option really isn't an option for my family...it will be on the list no matter what but I'm happy to hear BMW is finally "with it" on the electronics/convienence factors.

Thanks, Bee!
