I have a 2004 530i. The computer mpg is way off. Is there a way to recalibrate this? Local dealer says no. Need to confirm whether or not I am just stuck. Thanks for any information.

Out of curiosity, how do you know it is way off? I assume you've reset it several times but to no avail?

I bought the car in Louisville, KY and drove it back to Albuquerque, NM. I checked the mileage and reset the computer at every fill-up on the way home. The computer was consistently about 22% optimistic. Do you have an answer to my question?

I can't answer your question, but. I checked mine. It was always optimistic. After I had my dash pixals repaired my indicated MPG went way down. I'm not sure what that may have had to do with it, I haven't checked it since. I should get a chance in a couple of weeks.

Your car is calculating mpg using imperial gallons, which are about 22% larger than U.S. gallons. The E60 can be reprogrammed to calculate mpg by U.S. gallons.
And I hope the deal was really good to justify all that driving...

Yes, the system can be recalibrated. I have done it as mine was about 1-2 mpg high. It is now dead accurate to the tenth of a mpg, consistently tank to tank and I check every tank. Just do a search and find the write up on how to get into the system. It is a bit tricky.
