 New to BMW, need advise

Hi, i've been interested in BMW for many years, but didn't have a chance to get a BMW
I just moved from a small city to Toronto and need a bigger and stronger car since here has lot more highway and a 87 corolla GTS(RWD) can't go that stabible. I really like BMW's design in and out especially i LOVE RWD cars, so thinking get a 3 series/6 cyc (enough for 4 cyc.) and have few questions hope someone can give me some suggestion

1. I only believe Euro and Jap cars won't break down easily..so how's BMW perform?
2. I heard is expensive to fix a BMW?
3. how's gas mileage on 3 series?
4. any resource to find out differences year-to-year
5. any resource to find out spec year-to-year?

Thank you guys so much!!

What years are you thinking about, or how much are you looking to spend? As you can imagine, all of your questions very greatly from year to year, and depend on the age of the car you are looking at, how well it's been maintained, etc.

My #1 advice would be, when you find a used car you seem to like, take it to a very experienced BMW shop and have it checked out prior to buying it, especially if you are looking at a car more than 5 years old, or more than say 60,000 miles.

1. BMW's perform quite well. The jury may be out on the new 3 - but I think it will perform well.

2. Everything is covered under warranty for the first 48 months - after that not that much difference from most makes. There are lots of BMW's with huge mileage that are still running after many asian cars have bit the dust.

3. Gas mileage is reasonable for the class.

4. 5. Google for lots of results.

Drive all the Euro and far east cars you wish to - then strap on a BMW 3 series and forget your points 1 to 5.

Get the BMW.........the rest are pretenders

I went from an '87 Celica GTS to a Corolla to a 2002 BMW 325ci, so I've got a bit of familiarity with the jump you're about to make.

1. First off, a BMW is *not* a 'Yota. Powertrain-wise, they're great -- you can easily run the original engine and tranny well past 200,000 miles in many cases. It's the "little" stuff that you take for granted in the Jap cars that can bite you - door seals (bad glue), window regulators (whoops! glass fell into the door!), ultra-fancy-do-everything-AC-unit death (bad resistor that takes about 4 hours to replace), etc. Both the 'Yotas that I had are still on the road with the original AC parts -- don't expect the same from a BMW. You won't be replacing the compressor at 50k \miles or anything like that, but around 75k-100k you'll be repairing a few things.

But don't worry - they're not Fords.

2. See #1. You shouldn't be replacing major components, but the little things can add up if you don't allocate for them. Make sure you use a reputable shop, take their advice, and keep up with your periodic inspections.

3. BMW mileage is good, and GREAT considering what you get. My 325ci (5-speed manual tranny) made ~190 hp at the crank and gave me about 25-27 MPG mixed city/highway driving. On long trips it got 29-30 consistently. For a car that moved pretty well AND weighed 3200+ pounds that's mighty impressive. Just remember you'll be using premium gas.

4. & 5. Google

New 3 series come with 4 year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranties, AND 4 year/50,000 mile maintenance. That means your oil changes, wiper blades, brake pads, brake rotors, spark plugs, air filters, etc. are all paid for. You just buy gas and tires. If you can, I'd consider a newer 3 if you're really worried about having warranty coverage.

Definitely check back here when you've got an idea of $$$ to spend, model years you're interested in, etc. This place is a fountain of knowledge.

Oh, and don't get me wrong about #1 -- JG has the right idea. Strap on a 3 series and you will QUICKLY learn why we're not all driving Lexus ISs here.

first, thank you guys so much, just more curious about older 318 with 4 cyclinder, are they comfort and powerful enough for me on the highway runing over 130km with low rpm and runs stabible? because i currently have a 4 cyclinder 1.6L RWD corolla so if it's not really different from 1.8L 4 cyclinder BMW than i will consider the 6 cyclinder 320 or better model, Thanks!

Well, here in the US they only brought the 318 over for a few years, so either we Americans (1) wanted more power or (2) wanted a certain level of prestige that a "mere 4 cylinder" couldn't deliver. As a result I don't know much about them, but if I seem to recall that they were decent engines.

As for "low RPM at 130km/h", I'm not sure. Search around for gear ratios and you should see how the engine runs in 5th gear at 130km/h.

For the record, though, BMW's inline 6 cylinder engines are legendary. I would definitely try to drive both if you can.
