So Toyota and Honda have restated all their cars horsepower ratings using the new SAE J2723 standard. Most horsepower ratings have gone down for them, but some other cars' horsepower ratings have gone up...the Corvette goes from 500 hp to 505 hp, the Cadillac XLR goes from 440 hp to 469 hp.

The question I have regards the new 3 liter engines for the 3 Series and 5 Series in the E90 and E60. Are they rated with the new SAE standard or not?
Since the horsepower went up from the old 3 liter, I'm thinking it might be that the new SAE standard has finally taken away BMW's traditional under-rating of their horsepower (which is why I think BMWs have always tested faster in acceleration tests than their horsepower numbers would suggest), and could be a reason why the tests of the E90 don't show much of an improvement in acceleration even with the "added horsepower" since the horsepower could be quite similar to the outgoing standard 225 horsepower 3 liter.
On the other hand, if BMW didn't use the new standard for the E90 engines, I still would expect some kind of increase when they do retest under the new SAE standard.
Supposedly, car companies only need to use the new standard on brand new engines (brand new starting when, I don't know). However, they can restate all their cars, which is what Toyota and Honda did.
Anyone know if the new BMW engines were rated with the new SAE standard?

Anyone know if the new BMW engines were rated with the new SAE standard? | The article is confusing. First is mentions that Quote: | Over time, most automakers are expected to comply with the new guidelines, and horsepower ratings for other vehicles could be revised. | , but then mentions that Toyota had to retest to comply with CA ad laws. Why don't all others have to retest to comply with laws? Is it that domestics don't make horsepower part of the ads because they are typically down on power relative to others?
If BMW's engines make more than claimed, they would not be required to up their advertised hp. Its only a problem if they underdeliver like the RX-8 did when it first came out.

The testing standards change every so often. And typical Detroit news, that the Japanese have been overstaing their HP, because when tested to the enw standard, they went down. All that means is that the Japanese used evry loophole in the old standard to maximize HP. And this fro teh group who used SAE Gross HP for many years (pre-early 70s).
