Can you turn off rear side impact air bags on an X3?

We have a friend who just bought a new X3. He asked if there was a way to turn off the rear side impact air bags. We own 2 X3s and did not get that add on and I do not see anything about turning off air bags in my manual.

The dealer here in NJ said he wold have to bring it into the dealership to turn off the air bags. It all sounds very strange if you ask me. First, wanting to turn off something you asked for and second, having the dealer say only they can do it.

Does anyone have knowledge about X3 air bags and how they 'might' be able to turn them off?

Thanks in advance

Based on my pre-purchase research, I discovered:
  • Rear side airbags they come from the factory disabled.
  • The dealer will enable them for you after explicity asking you if you want them enabled
  • There is supposed to be a sticker on te rear doors indicating the status of the airbags (enabled or disabled)
  • The dealer can disable/enable them for you
  • Here is the info I gathered
Look for the label on the doors and have your dealer verify status or disbale them if they are enabled.

I have seen nothing that indicates that you can enable or disbale the airbags yourself.
