BMW Sauber F1 Team Car - tyres
Regardless of engine power and aerodynamic efficiency of the chassis, the performance of the overall package cannot be realized unless tyres capable of transmitting the car's full potential to the track are specified. In view of the immense forces at work, tyre durability is another vital performance consideration.
In 2007 all teams competing in the Formula One World Championship will be supplied by the Japanese rubber company, Bridgestone. With the introduction of standardised tyres from a single tyre manufacturer, significantly lower cornering speeds are anticipated.
"It's clear that the cars will slide around more," says Willy Rampf, Technical Director of the BMW Sauber F1 Team. "As a rule we should expect the cars to run with greater downforce in order to compensate for the loss of grip."
Bridgestone will provide two tyre specifications per Grand Prix weekend, with each driver being supplied 14 sets of "dry" tyres (seven each per specification). A maximum of fours sets may be fitted during the first practice day, with the balance reserved for Saturday and Sunday use. In dry conditions both specifications must be raced, whilst drivers will have access to seven sets of "rain" tyres (four sets "wet weather" tyres and three sets "extreme weather" tyres) for use in wet conditions.
